It was really refreshing for me to read the following short article in the Sun newspaper on Friday 29 August by Jon Gaunt:
"Why are some white Brits so scared of their kids being taught about the horror and consequences of slavery? I only ask because every time I discuss or write about the subject, I get inundated with calls and letters of outrage.
I agree with the curriculum authority, which says slavery and black history must be taught in all schools. Like it or not, this country's greatness was partly built on the backs of this foul trade and our children need to understand why and how our ancestors could treat people as sub-human.
Of course, we don't need to be handing out the collective horse-hair shirt and rubbishing our heritage and history, but a mature democracy like ours should be able to acknowledge the negative AND positive aspects of our past.
One thing I want to scrap, though, is the concept of black history, because I don't believe we should segregate this subject.
As far as I am concerned, slavery is BRITISH history."
